The Fort McKay First Nation is nearing completion of its Brand-New K-9 school located in the community of Fort McKay. The Elsie Fabian School will be opening its doors September of 2022 and we are looking for dynamic and passionate Educators who love Northern Living to join the team! The school will incorporate both the Dene and Cree Language, culture, and Land-Based Education where students will learn about their rich local history. Fort McKay is looking for talented educators who practice and believe that the well-being of the child is at the center of everything; this is the shared practice and belief of the Fort McKay elders, parents and community members.

We are seeking a highly dedicated and professional School Counsellor who is looking for an enriching experience to be part of the new school team. The School Counsellor will work collaboratively as a team with their administrators, teachers, staff, students, and parents. The successful candidate will have specific knowledge and training in counselling children and adolescents in a school environment. As the School Counsellor will you be able to support regular classroom teachers with specialized teaching strategies regarding mental health and social emotional learning. This is a full-time position reporting directly to the Principal of Elsie Fabian School.

*PLEASE NOTE that this is a year-round position and the successful candidate will work through the summer and some evenings and weekends to support clients outside of school as well as supporting summer programs being run in the community.  


Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Work with school administration to intervene and address day-to-day urgent social and emotional issues of students.
  • Provide training and education to staff using various universal instructional approaches and strategies for communication and social skills, friendship/relationship development, conflict resolution and self-regulation to build students’ resiliency and independence.
  • Provide small group and individual support for students to build student success and independence.
  • Complete referrals for therapeutic supports to other community agencies who support children and families who have children with emotional and mental health needs.
  • Supplement the religion/health programs, enhance student social skills, perspective taking and empathy development in whole class or small group settings.
  • Coordinate the development of Instructional support plans and ensure regular and timely completion of behavior plans for students.
  • Demonstrate compassion and use a variety of effective communication techniques when communicating to staff, parents, and community agencies.
  • Work with elders to support the cultural and spiritual needs of the students, as well as seeking out and supporting cultural activities that will support overall wellness.
  • Build relationships with services in the Wood Buffalo region to assist clients with additional services.
  • Respond to emergencies and follow appropriate protocols.
  • Consistent communication with supervisor.
  • Provide statistical data to principal monthly.
  • Maintain records and files in a clinical and professional manner.
  • May be on call during the evenings and weekends if needed.


  • Master’s degree in Psychology, Art Therapy, Social Work, Psych Nursing or other related human service field.
  • Active registration with the applicable regulatory college or professional association.
  • Basic first aid/WHIMIS.
  • Experience in running groups and meetings for students
  • Familiarity with the DSM-5.
  • Experience in conflict management.
  • 5 years related experience in working with at risk groups and supporting healthy living and life skills.
  • 5 years’ experience in addictions services and counselling
  • Experiencing working with clients that have trauma and underlying mental health diagnosis
  • Extensive Experience working in a First Nations community including knowledge of First Nations culture, traditions and values is considered an asset
  • Ability to speak, read and write Cree and/or Dene considered an asset
  • Clean Criminal Record Check with vulnerable sector required
  • Valid class 5 Driver’s License & Clean Driver’s Abstract required
  • Successful candidate will be required to live in (or relocate to) Fort McMurray, Alberta
