ABOUT THE ROLE
We are seeking a passionate Outreach Education Instructor who is looking for an enriching and rewarding experience to join our Education team. The Outreach Education Instructor will be responsible for supporting and developing both school aged and mature Fort McKay students, while focusing on the delivery of exceptional educational services.  Reporting directly to the Principal, this is a full-time contract position until August 2024.  The incumbent may occasionally need to work outside of regular working hours.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Lead instruction and provide quality teaching, ongoing analysis, pedagogical knowledge and make decisions that support optimum learning for all students at an outreach high school.
  • The teaching assignment is for Mathematics, Science, English Language Arts, Social Studies, Physical Education, and Career and Technology Studies. Lead instructor for Math and Science.
  • Work with individual students or groups of students both in the classroom and in other settings
  • Collect and prepare learning materials and use technology to support student learning.
  • Responsible for scheduling appointments for students with exceptionalities who need one-to-one support.  
  • Use effective instructional strategies to help students with lessons and assignments.
  • Physical Education programming where students earn credits to meet their graduation requirement through working out at the local fitness center, and arena and using the Elsie Fabian School gymnasium. Plan field trips such as swimming, golfing, and skiing.
  • Career Technology Studies programming in Fashion Studies, Foods, Art, etc.
  • Create a classroom characterized by inclusion, equity, and differentiated instruction.
  • Participate in the school community beyond the classroom.  
  • Build positive and productive relationships with students, parents/guardians, peers, and others in the school and local community to support student learning.
  • Establish, promote, and sustain inclusive learning environments where diversity is embraced and every student is welcomed, cared for, respected, and safe.  
  • Develop and apply foundational knowledge about First Nations, Métis, and Inuit for the benefit of all students.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of and adherence to the legal frameworks and policies that provide the foundations for the Alberta education system.
  • Provide tutoring and homework help to Junior and Senior high school in the evenings from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. two to three nights per week.
  • Communicate with Indigenous Liaison, and Fort McMurray High School Principals to determine who would benefit from the additional support at after-school tutoring
  • Tutoring students drop in on an as-needed basis. Parents must be informed of their students’ progress.
  • Create year, month, and day plans.  
  • Prepare materials and complete clerical tasks such as taking attendance as required.  
  • Collect and prepare learning material and use technology to support student learning.  
  • Support students with meeting application deadlines for the Apprenticeship Program, university, college, band funding, and bursaries or refer them to appropriate departments.
  • Work collaboratively with external organizations such as Careers the Next Generation, Athabasca Tribal Council, and NEAFAN.  
  • Create and enforce classroom rules that promote a positive classroom climate work and deal with the demands of a diverse, multi-grade classroom composed of both school-aged and adult learners and students with exceptionalities.
  • Create and ensure a classroom culture based on respect, excellence, and pride.  
  • Ensure students integrate into the classroom.  
  • Motivate and encourage students to participate in learning activities.  
  • Keep track of statistics such as demographics, attendance, and classroom activities.  
  • Report cards are distributed to parents at the end of each semester.
  • Other duties as assigned
KEY REQUIREMENTS
  • Possess a Bachelor’s degree
  • Knowledge of teaching Math, Science, English Language Arts, , Social Studies CTF and CTS courses, Physical Education, and a variety of options at the junior high school level
  • Experience working in a First Nations community including knowledge of First Nations culture, traditions and values is a definite asset
  • Clean Criminal Record Check with vulnerable sector required
  • Valid class 5 Driver’s License & Clean Driver’s Abstract required
  • Successful candidate will be required to live in (or relocate to) Fort McMurray, Alberta
